Cheap Oil Junior, Expensive Neighbours: Stamper Oil & Gas

WTI slid about 4% yesterday to just under $100 a barrel as the U.S. and Iran move toward talks, well off its $119 high from March. When the war premium comes out of crude, money goes hunting for cheap leverage to the next big discovery.

That means juniors.

And right now the junior with the best address in Namibia trades for about a dime. Stamper Oil & Gas (TSXV: STMP, OTC: STMGF) is too cheap not to look at.

The neighbours

Stamper holds a 32.9% indirect interest in PEL 107 in Namibia’s Orange Basin. Right next door is PEL 90, where Chevron plans to drill its Nabba-1X well before year-end. The majors are buying in, not out:

  • Equinor agreed to take 17.4% of PEL 90 from Chevron, its first move back into Namibia in over three decades.
  • Chevron paid US$11M plus milestone payments to take another 10% of the block.
  • TotalEnergies, which found Venus just south of Nabba, is lining up a three-well appraisal at Mopane, and Shell called its Merlin-1X results encouraging.

That’s Chevron, Equinor, TotalEnergies and Shell all spending money on the same stretch of coast. Stamper’s market cap? Around C$13M.

The insiders agree

Two directors have bought just over 1M shares on the open market since October 29, about C$77K of their own cash, and they’re still adding:

  • Mathew Goldsmith: 667,000 shares, including 600,000 today
  • Simon Akit: 362,000 shares across October 29 and 30

Goldsmith bought his biggest block in the past few days and now holds about 10.4M shares, roughly 8.6% of the company. Directors don’t buy their own stock unless they like what’s coming.

Bottom line

Cooling oil sends investors looking for leverage, and at around a dime, Stamper is too cheap not to look at. The spud is coming, the neighbours are paying up, and the insiders are buying. I’d rather own the neighbour before the headline than after it.
